Nicolas Degorce

Climate Change Consultant 

Supporting the maritime industry through its energy transition takes dedication, enthusiasm and collaboration. With a decade of experience as a naval engineer, Nicolas joined BV Solutions M&O in 2021, combining his passion for sailing and sustainability to support shipping towards greener frontiers.

We sat down with Nicolas to learn about his role, his career path and what inspires him day in and day out.

Tell us about your role, Nicolas.

As Strategy & Climate Change Consultant , I draw daily on both my commitment to environmentalism and my knowledge of the naval industry. My main clients are banks, investors and ship owners. I’m a consultant, meaning I help clients to navigate the challenges of the energy transition. I see myself as an instructor, creating a course to explain how shipping is going to evolve as it decarbonizes in line with Paris Agreement targets. I help ease this process by providing research-backed strategies to our clients.

What did you do before joining BV Solutions M&O?

I’ve always carefully chosen a career path and job opportunities to work at the intersection of the naval engineering and environmentalism. I actually had an internship with BV Solutions M&O right at the start of my career! Another highlight was being Lead Engineer at Energy Observer, which gave me the opportunity to sail on the first hydrogen-run ship to circumnavigate the world. I have worked in Australia and all over France before coming to join the BV Solutions M&O team in Nantes.

What does a typical day look like for you?

On a typical morning, I touch base with the junior engineers I oversee, before checking in with clients to plan current and future projects. I normally grab lunch with a small group of colleagues – which is a great chance to get to know them better! In the afternoon, I work independently on more technical tasks such as calculation reports.

What has been your highlight of working at BV Solutions M&O so far?

My most rewarding project to date was creating an overview of the energy transition in shipping for CIC, a French bank. I built on our research to run discussions and workshops. The project gave me, my team and the client an incredibly valuable big-picture perspective of the energy transition. And it’s exciting to work directly with the groups that impact the future of shipping.

How do you live your commitment to the environment, at work and beyond?

As my colleagues will tell you, I am constantly looking for more ways to decrease our impact on the planet – individually and as a society. Recently, I decided to stop travelling by plane to lower my personal carbon emissions. Environmental concerns are part of my life, in my job and in my every day.

What do you do in your downtime?

This should come as no surprise: my favorite hobby is sailing! I’ve been sailing for 20 years now, and it has given me so much. For one, it’s taught me how to work in sync with a team to achieve a common goal. This skill is directly transferable to my work, where we leverage our collective knowledge to reach our goals, and those of our clients.

Looking to the future, how do you hope your career will evolve?

So far I’ve found a welcoming and intelligent team here, and it’s a great match for me to be able to work collaboratively. In the future, I could see myself taking on a managerial role, overseeing larger numbers of people. I would also like to further develop my personal expertise in decarbonization, and to continue specializing in reducing the emissions of the naval industry.
