Meet our team

Carla Millaud

CAP Global Service Coordinator

For many, the attraction of a maritime career is as a way to take to the seas and see the world. What they may not realize is that this doesn’t only apply to sailors. With two naval engineering internships at BV Solutions M&O, Carla was been able to develop rich early career experiences across the world.

Now a full time employee in France, Carla told us about her globe-spanning career growth.

Tell us about yourself, Carla.

I grew up in Paris, but I was always drawn to the ocean and ships as I spent most of my childhood in Britany, Charente Maritime and Corsica. This fascination with the sea stayed with me after I attended an intensive preparatory course and then began my engineering degree at the École Nationale Supérieure Maritime (ENSM). My studies required professional experiences – which I did in France and in Adelaide, Australia.

Why did you apply for an internship at BV Solutions M&O?

At ENSM, although I didn’t pursue the naval officer route, I was able to follow training in navigation and subsequently decided to take my boating license. I got to build up a real understanding of how ships work practically alongside my engineering course. I took part in the Defense Industry Cup Race – an Australian regatta held in December – alongside my colleagues.

I discovered more about potential opportunities as my studies progressed – like environmental preservation or classification. Pursuing these discoveries led me to discover the technical advisory services offered at BV Solutions M&O.

How have your internship experiences informed your career progression?

It’s been a huge boost to my professional development. I was able to experience a wide range of activities from remote inspection techniques to new technologies, to working with maritime actors in France as a part of the Assurance GSL.

In Australia, I worked with experts on complex projects, and I built up experience in the naval defense sector. I had the opportunity to support clients in managing their energy transition, which is connected to my studies and I’m so glad to build on that.

In my new role, I am once again part of the Assurance team, and managing complex projects, including setting up and reviewing Condition Assessment Program (CAP) reports – and conducting training.

We share a real passion for the work we do and we also collaborate well together, we communicate and help each other. It’s a joy to work here because of that spirit of teamwork.

BV Solutions M&O

I've always been drawn to the ocean. As part of my studies, I got to understanding of how ships work practically alongside my engineering course. Since then I've also developed a keen interest in marine environmental preservation, which is really important to me.

What did you discover about working in a new country?

Working in Australia was interesting because it’s a very different culture! Everyone was just as professional and motivated as in France, but the ways of expressing that are different. I also think that concern about marine conservation was more apparent there because of their proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. I went snorkeling there; so I’ve seen firsthand how magical it is and how much it needs protecting.

What would you say to someone who wanted to apply for an internship at BV Solutions M&O?

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! Be open about your interests and motivations, that’s crucial. It’s important that young people in the industry be encouraged to pursue this engineering field because there are great job opportunities.

BV Solutions M&O is a company where you can make the most of those opportunities in a positive work culture. If you’re passionate about the industry you’ll be able to grow here.

Looking to the future, how do you hope your career will evolve?

I’m not quite sure yet where the future will take me. I’m currently focused on developing my skillset and experience with the experts around me. Ultimately I’d like be involved in marine conservation and environmental protection in general.
