A Master Mariner with over 20 years’ experience at sea, Simon Jones works in Marine Consulting at BV Solutions M&O. Simon successfully made the transition from seafarer to onshore consultant, and draws on his passion for the maritime world to support his clients.

Tell us about your role, Simon.

I joined BV Solutions M&O as a Senior Marine Consultant in 2019, and I was quickly promoted to Principal Marine Consultant in 2020 and then most recently to MWS & Marine Project Lead in December 2022. My role enables me to work in a variety of areas of the business, and with a diverse portfolio of clients. Ultimately, I oversee high-level projects for renewable energy and oil & gas majors, carry out vessel audits and perform marine warranty surveying. As a Master Mariner, I can draw on my broad experience within the maritime world.

What did you do before joining BV Solutions M&O?

Having grown up in a seafaring family, I was drawn to a career in the maritime industry. It seemed like the ideal opportunity to follow specialized training while seeing the world. When I finished school, I studied for a Higher National Diploma in Nautical Science, qualifying as an Officer of the Watch. I went on to become a seagoing Master Mariner, working with an extensive list of different cargoes. Having gained in-depth seafaring experience, I decided to transition to a shore-based role, and BV Solutions M&O has proved the perfect fit!

What motivates you in your role every day?

I’m lucky to have an incredibly diverse role in an integral segment of the maritime industry. No two days are the same, and despite being onshore, I’m not restricted to a typical office job. I have the chance to go out and meet clients, and perform surveys and audits.

I am continuously being challenged and encouraged to further my professional development. It is hugely rewarding to know that with every project, we are making a difference. Our clients rely on us to make their operations safer and our expert knowledge helps them better manage their vessels.

What has been your highlight of working at BV Solutions M&O so far?

Where do I start? I would have to say the development of our marine warranty offer at BV Solutions M&O has been my most rewarding project. In collaboration with the Operations Director and the Engineering team, we have started to win more and more clients. We recently secured a project for the world’s largest underground transmission line and the shipment of cables. It’s a huge achievement for the team.

JONES

MWS and Marine Projects Lead

BV Solutions M&O

As part of BV Solutions M&O and as Chairman of the North East Scotland Outport for the Honorable Company of Master Mariners, I've been able to put my at-sea experience to good use onshore. I've been able to play a part in shaping the shipping industry and in developing my interests within the company - particularly in marine warranty services.

How important is teamwork at BV Solutions M&O?

Teamwork is one of the driving forces at BV Solutions M&O. If I had to describe my team in three words, I would say: professional, ambitious and hard-working. I joined the company looking for an agile, knowledgeable team, but one that would also be fun to work with. That’s exactly what I’ve found! We take pride in our work and accomplish goals together. My managers push me and support me to reach my personal targets and develop my ideas.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I’m still a keen rugby player, and I am involved with the committee at my local club. When I’m not on the pitch, I love spending time with my kids and have a passion for restoring and riding classic motorcycles.

I also enjoy helping others to make the transition from sea to shore through the Marine Society. It can be a shock to the system at first. I appreciate being able to share my experience with others and open their eyes to where their qualifications can lead.

I am also the Chairman of the North East Scotland Outport and Liveryman for the Honourable Company of Master Mariners.

Looking to the future, how do you hope your career will evolve?

I would describe myself as a very ambitious person and I plan to work my way up the career ladder. I would like to specialize in marine warranty, and my managers are helping me work towards this. I share the company’s ambition to be an industry leader in marine assurance and marine warranty.

Since I started out, I’ve seen huge developments in the industry. Changes in legislation mean more stringent restrictions for ship owners, crews and companies. Our work will be even more key in helping our clients navigate the evolving maritime landscape.

Are you passionate about maritime consulting and looking for a team that shares your drive? Would you like the opportunity to further your career and develop your ideas with BV Solutions M&O?
